Community Outreach & Treatment Services (COATS)

Comprised of outreach teams, COATS is designed to seek out and treat people who have difficulty using traditional outpatient mental health services. With the goal of reducing hospitalization rates, each program provides assertive, individualized treatment in the community and links people with appropriate community services. COATS includes teams who do outreach to seriously mentally ill adults in the community, homeless people with mental illnesses, mentally ill individuals in the County Detention Centers, elderly people with mental illnesses, and elderly people suspected of being neglected or abused. Hispanic Outreach

A bi-lingual psychiatrist and social worker treat Hispanic patients during weekly visits to the Spanish Catholic Center.

Southeast Outreach Program

Two bi-lingual outreach workers provide home treatment to Southeast Asian refugees in the County.

In-home Intervention

A team of therapists situated in the Penn-Silver Building specialize in providing in-home services to children and families with serious psychiatric problems with the aim of maintaining the family unit.

Family Crisis Team

The Family Crisis Team situated in Laurel responds to families who have suffered from a violent occurrence by offering prompt therapy and medication as needed.

School Based Programs
Through a collaborative effort with the Prince George's County public schools, the Division of Mental Health has developed mental health components at three special education wings throughout the County. A full range of mental health services are available to students and their families. Consultation is also provided to the teaching staff and specialized services are designed to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations and/or residential placements.

Therapeutic Nursery
Provides mental health services to children and their families who attend special education early childhood programs. Eligible children include those who have serious emotional or behavioral difficulties or are at risk of being removed from their homes. Mental health consultation services are also available to teachers and school personnel. Teaching and consultation services are also provided to teen mothers in conjunction with the public schools.
