Maryland Correctional Institution - Jessup Wins 2012 Public Safety Honor Guard Competition
TOWSON, MD (April 11, 2012) – Maryland Correctional Institution -- Jessup (MCI-J) won first place in today's third-annual Department of PublicSafety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) Honor Guard competition, earning the right to represent DPSCS at all official events for the next year.
The competition was held at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions gymnasium in Sykesville, MD.
A combined team from North Branch Correctional Institution and Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland took second, with the Maryland Correctional Training Center outof Hagerstown coming in third out of the field of 13 teams.
MCI-J Warden Dayena Corcoran said her institution was proud of the team's effort. It's the first year the team has worked together, and they wanted to do well in the competition, she said.
Judges of the competition were DPSCS Secretary Gary D. Maynard, Deputy Secretary J. Michael Stouffer, Deputy Secretary G. Lawrence Franklin and Charles Rapp, Executive Director for the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions.
Maynard was pleased with the efforts of all the teams, he said. The Honor Guards are the most visible DPSCS employees, helping to set the standard for the Department, the Secretary said.
