Inmates Broadcast News Behind Bars
HAGERSTOWN, MD - Some unlikely reporters have been delivering the local news in an unexpected place.
Calvert Porter and Keith Williams make a dynamic pair behind the anchor desk. They, along with their studio crew, are all inmates at the Maryland Correctional Training Center (MCTC).
Much like a network newscast, Porter and Williams not only know how to dish out the latest local news, but they ad-lib with a few laughs.
No tax dollars are spent to produce the newscast. Prison officials say all the inmates involved volunteer their time.
Some of the topics they cover include victim's rights, prison rules, and health such as alergies.
The newscast not only inspired the inmates to focus on the future, it also increases security inside the facility by opening the lines of communication.
