Author to lead inmate book discussion

A group of Maryland inmates will meet Monday with the author of this year's "One Maryland, One Book" selection.

Warren St. John, author of "Outcasts United: An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman's Quest to Make a Difference" will lead a book discussion group with inmates at the Jessup Correctional Institution.

The state Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services said the discussion marks the first time a "One Maryland, One Book" author has met with inmates.

Education while in prison is important, said J. Michael Stouffer, Division of Corrections commissioner.

"We must educate them so they have the tools to make different choices, to find employment and choose a different path than the one that brought them here," he said.
