WASHINGTON - Maryland prisons are seeing fewer cells in cells.

State prisons have noticed a reduction of the forbidden item and it has cut down on crime, authorities said.

"While we are doing much better at interdicting contraband than we were a few years ago, it's unlikely that we will ever completely eliminate the cell phone threat," said Maryland Secretary of Public Safety and Correctional Services Gary Maynard.

Authorities found nearly a third fewer prohibited phones this year, and also noticed about a 30-percent reduction in prisoner assaults on staff.

"The proliferation of cell phones increases chances of prison violence fuelled by illegal activity," Maynard said.
